28/11/2011 Band President
For the first time in the bands history we have a President. At the recent annual dinner and prize presentation Edwin Cubbon was appointed Band President.
Edwin has played in the band for over 70 years and is still playing. At a meeting earlier this year it was decided the band should have a president and it was unanimously agreed that Edwin should be the first.
For more information read the Band Awards 2011.
10/11/11 4barsrest
An article appeared on 4barsrest on the 8th November announcing the soon to be published new arrangement of a Manx traditional carol arranged for the Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band by Leigh Baker.
Leigh has played with a number of top bands as well as being Composer in Residence with the Brighouse and Rastrick Band.
Rodney Evans and Ian Cottier of ‘Time for Brass’ are researching the music and will be writing programme notes for the published version which will be available soon.
We hope to be including this in this years Christmas concerts.

Also taking part will be the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra, King Williams College Choir, and groups from all the islands secondary schools.
Both concerts are to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The band were glad to hear that planning permission has now been granted for the extension to the band room. The next stage is to apply for Building approval. Once this has been approved the band will be going out to tender for the building work, which hopefully will commence in spring 2012.

27/08/2011 Samantha Ash Fund
Following the band concert in St Georges Church on 23rd August which was organised by the Royal Artillery Association to raise funds for the Samantha Ash Fund, the band have decided to arrange a further concert, this time at the Castletown Civic Centre on Tuesday 30th August, when all proceeds will again be donated to the Samantha Ash Fund.
Organisers of the fund are trying to raise money to send Samantha, who has been blind since birth, to a specialist blind school in the UK.

10/04/2011 Swearing in Ceremony
The band were honoured to be taking part in the Swearing in Ceremony for the Islands’ new Lieutenant Governor Mr Adam Wood in Castletown on Thursday 7th April.
Before the ceremony, whilst the invited guests and officials were arriving, the band entertained the crowds in Castletown Square with a selection of marches and Manx tunes, including Manxland, Kelly and True and Trusty. On the arrival of the governor designate, the band led the gathering in the Royal Anthem and the National Anthem of the Isle of Man, followed by a rendition of Ellan Vannin during which Mr Wood met and talked to the crowds.
A procession of the officials and invited guests, led by friends from Manx Concert Brass who were going to be playing the fanfares on state trumpets, then made it’s way into Castle Rushen for the actually ceremony.
19/03/2011 Twitter
You can now follow the band on Twitter. We will be ‘tweeting’ about upcoming concerts, rehearsals, social events, in fact anything to do with the band and the brass band world. We can be found at http://twitter.com/castletownmet.
05/03/2011 Hyperbaric Charity Concert
In October last year, the band gave a concert at Abbey Church, Ballasalla, as a fund raising event for the Hyperbaric Chamber. The concert also featured Manx Choir, Caarjyn Cooidjagh. The concert consisted of Manx brass band music, arranged by the late Major J E Thirtle, former Musical Director of the band and Manx songs performed by the choir.
The evening saw a wealth of local music, rarely performed these days and the audience had a most enjoyable evening. At the end of the concert, the ladies of the Abbey Church served a Manx Tea in the hall which was appreciated by all.
Rodney Evans, the Bands Musical Director said that it was good to support local organisations, and particularly such a vital facility as the Hyperbaric Chamber. Many members of the band have been treated at this facility, and have benefited greatly. The evening raised a most creditable £395, plus a further donation from an audience member, raising the total to £400.

25/02/2011 Subscription Concert

The band will again be welcoming David Horsfield over as guest conductor and tutor and will be tackling a number of challenging pieces. We are also pleased that Ian Astill, one of our own, will be back from his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, to take part in the weekend and to perform a solo during the concert.
Everyone is welcome, and once again entry will be free but there will be a retiring collection.
09/02/2011 Peel Pensioners Concert
The band held their first concert of 2011 on Wednesday 9th February at the the Phillip Christian Centre in Peel for the Peel Pensioners Club. This is always an enjoyable engagement as the audience are appreciative of the commitment of the band and enjoy the stories and jokes of the bands compere, Willy Kneale.
