Soprano Cornet
I started to learn a brass band instrument at 7, being taught by my grandfather who was in the Salvation Army. When I was 12, I joined the Lancashire Youth Band under the conductorship of Harry Mortimer. I also played with the Salvation Army for 20 years. My late uncle, Charles Fradley (conductor of Haydock & Ashton Youth Band) tutored me for a few years when I was young & it was he that once said I would suit the soprano cornet. It was to be around 35 years later before I touched a soprano cornet & I love the instrument. I joined Castletown Band in 2000 under Major Thirtle after a gap of 20 years not playing an instrument.
